What a joy and privilege it is to be a Christian Scientist! I remember thinking when I was quite young how wonderful Christian Science must be. The love, harmony, and joy expressed by a dear aunt and uncle and their family, students of Science, were always something I desired more than anything. So words cannot express the gratitude I feel to have had that desire fulfilled to the utmost in a wonderful marriage to a Christian Scientist and in two daughters, one of whom attends the Sunday School and the other the nursery of a branch church.
Before my marriage my family had just started attending a Church of Christ, Scientist, and we had a most wonderful healing of grief when a loved one passed on. This healing was instantaneous and so complete that it is still a great inspiration to me. The practitioner who was called lifted our thoughts so far above any dismal belief of death to the light of ever-present Life and Love that we found ourselves comforting others. In fact, I didn't even shed a tear, for self-pity had vanished too and was replaced by perfect peace and joy.
After my husband and I had been married about six years and still had no child, we decided to try to adopt a baby. Having a child was so very important to us that we just felt we couldn't be happy without one. The woman who interviewed us at the adoption agency was very sympathetic, but she didn't feel they would have a baby for us for quite some time since there were so many who had applied before we had. After listening to our answers to her questions about Christian Science, she said, "Why don't you put your religion of prayer into practice and have your own baby?" Well, these words really awakened us; and instead of walking away disconsolate and unhappy, we both said later that we felt uplifted and filled with love and gratitude for Christian Science.
