On page 402 in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "The time approaches when mortal mind will forsake its corporeal, structural, and material basis, when immortal Mind and its formations will be apprehended in Science, and material beliefs will not interfere with spiritual facts." And at the end of the paragraph, she writes, "The material body manifests only what mortal mind believes, whether it be a broken bone, disease, or sin."
I proved this two years ago when I met with a serious accident in my home. Knowing that man is completely spiritual, not in nor of a material body, and that the body manifests only what mortal mind believes, I very vigorously denied the possibility of broken bones, dislocations, pain, swelling, bruising, shock. I knew the physical body could make no conditions for itself, for man dwells entirely in the realm of thought. He really is spiritual and perfect, and as the reflection of God I knew that I had complete control over this situation.
After about ten minutes of vigorously declaring the truth and denying various phases of error, I felt I should try to sit up. Later I tried to stand up but found I was unable to walk. The pain in my hip was extreme. In a dazed condition and with the help of surrounding furniture, I managed to get into an armchair. I tried to remember the title of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly for that week, and when I realized it was "Adam and Fallen Man," it seemed so funny I started to laugh.
