I was reared in a Christian Science home. Because of my parents' steadfast reliance on God to meet our every need we experienced many healings. I joined The Mother Church while still a pupil in the Sunday School. I took Christian Science for granted, though, and shortly after I was married, I gave up attending church.
Although I called myself a Christian Scientist and occasionally read the Lesson-Sermon, I had drifted into an apathetic attitude toward all that I had been taught. Within two years, however, I found that I could not do without Science. Like the prodigal son in Jesus' parable, I experienced a spiritual famine and "began to be in want" (Luke 15:14).
One of the events that forced me to begin an earnest study of Christian Science was the inharmony experienced during the pregnancy and birth of our first child. I had always had relatively quick healings during my childhood, but in this case I was ill without relief for nine months. The birth was difficult, and the baby was almost a year old before she could digest her food properly. Finally I realized that I did not have to put up with spiritual hunger or physical suffering, but could, as did the prodigal son, return to the Father's house.
