All Power Is from Above

From the July 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Paul centralized thought on the subject of power in these words to the Romans: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."Rom. 13:1;

Mankind are deeply mesmerized by the belief that power is in matter, whereas matter is impotent. It can do naught of itself. This claim of matter's power is so strong that individuals habitually look to the muscles of the body, for example, to determine if they can lift a certain load. But in emergencies these same individuals would forget what the muscles might tell them, and lift, without questioning, weights heavier than they thought themselves capable of lifting. The muscles, then, are seen to involve, not power within themselves, but beliefs of limitation on power, limitations that withdraw in times of dire need to indicate true strength, which is spiritual. So it is with all other claims of power supposedly resident in matter.

Christian Science emphasizes the Biblical teaching that true power is of God alone. Mrs. Eddy asserts: "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God."Science and Health, p 228; God's power is universal. It is coexistent with God and the universe and is demonstrably present everywhere. True power is the force and might of God, Spirit. Wherever God is, there is God's power; and this power is not a blind force but is imbued with divine intelligence.
