The Universal Language

From the July 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In its wide ministry the Church of Christ, Scientist, reflects the Church Universal, God's perfect idea. Our Church speaks with "new tongues"—the message of the things of Spirit, which Christ Jesus sent his disciples "into all the world"Mark 16:15-17; to preach and to practice.

The understanding of the universality of the Christ-idea, which Jesus exemplified, is fundamental to the demonstration of Christian Science in every case. God, good, and man as His perfect expression can only be discerned spiritually. No material concept, however widely accepted, can be truly universal, for it is only a false, localized belief. As we recognize the universal nature of God as the Father of man, thought is lifted above the limited material sense of man to see that only the universal brotherhood as it exists in Christ, Truth, can be true.

To the degree that thought tends to limit the Church of Christ, Scientist, by space, time, language, race, or color, to that extent thought is materialized. Hence, the understanding of the universal nature of the Church of Christ, Scientist, is important in our demonstration of Christian Science. As we gain this understanding, our false belief in a local, limited, inharmonious, or personal sense of church gives way to the spiritual sense that sees Church as infinite Mind's idea. It is the spiritual sense of Church and man that heals, and it comes to each individual in his own time and place regardless of language or erudition.
