Spontaneity in Teaching

From the July 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Each Christian Science Sunday School class is a new class. The teacher and pupils know more than they did the previous session. They can recognize that divine Mind is constantly revealing new ways to bring out moral and spiritual lessons and examples of spontaneous healing. A teacher should never lose sight of the fact that, in reality, the students are individual, spiritual ideas. They and the teacher reflect the one divine Mind. The teacher, then, should use the concepts God gives him. Proving that God always gives right, fresh thoughts makes each class interesting for all.

In Revelation we read: "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. . . . Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."Rev. 3:13, 20; Asking God to tell one what he needs to know is a prerequisite to teaching a class effectively.

Inspiration for spontaneous discussion comes by ascending the mount of spiritual consciousness, where God and man are alone. Christ Jesus took the time to be alone with God during his teaching and healing ministry. He counseled, "When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly."Matt. 6:6;
