In the latter half of the last century Boston was given two titles. Various writers, including Mrs. Eddy, referred to it as an Athens. And the poet Whittier puts in the mouth of one of his characters this promise and prophecy:

I see the vision of days to come
When your beautiful City of the Bay 
Shall be Christian liberty's chosen home.
