Christian Science Restores Jesus' Theology

From the January 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In contrast to the orthodox concept of theology, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, revealed and demonstrated to the world that her discovery includes the healing of sickness as well as sin by divine power alone. Thus did Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, and his earlier followers demonstrate this power. In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy gives the following impressive statement: "Jesus established in the Christian era the precedent for all Christianity, theology, and healing. Christians are under as direct orders now, as they were then, to be Christlike, to possess the Christ-spirit, to follow the Christ-example, and to heal the sick as well as the sinning." Science and Health, p. 138; She declares that sickness is more easily cast out than sin, and concludes, "The Christian can prove this to-day as readily as it was proved centuries ago."

God being infinite good, He cannot be accused of creating or even permitting an opposite power called disease, ostensibly designed to destroy life and health, which are of necessity qualities of eternal Life. To believe that disease is a reality would be to attribute it to God, the only creator; and to teach or believe that God is powerless to preserve His qualities of health and life in His creation, man, would be to deny the supremacy, the omnipotence, of God, the infinite, by claiming an opposite evil power.

Such beliefs would be sin, and such sinful denial of God's omnipotence and allness produces suffering, just as any other type of sin causes suffering. Hence the suffering ordinarily attributed to a supposed power called disease is in fact produced by denying God's all-power and all-presence. Such denial being sin, the theology of Christian Science teaches that to stop the suffering, the sin of believing in an evil power opposed to God, the divine All-power, must cease. How can we help bring about the cessation of this sinful belief?
