True Theology Protects

From the January 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Where is protection to be found? Society is now asking this question frequently and urgently. The minds of people today are being bombarded by reports of rising accident rates, criminal violence, and mob madness. This mental bombardment has produced fear, and in turn the fear has engendered distrust and desperation. There is no peace in this picture of discord.

But we have an answer. The Psalmist voiced it when he said, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." Ps. 91:1; This "secret place of the most High" is the innermost consciousness of one's relation to God. It is the illumined realm of right thoughts. Mrs. Eddy has revealed the scientific, theological method of right knowing. Here is something more than a mere technique for achieving correct thinking in the abstract. In practice, as in theory, the theology of Christian Science revives Christ Jesus' method of dealing with the destructive tendencies in individuals and in society.

Jesus, the model minister of the protecting power of Spirit, God, had a career that made a radical impact on the world, a career that brought upon him both physical and mental bombardment. Threatened with death by mobs, maligned by slander and ribaldry, cruelly treated and shamefully slain, this man provided the ultimate answer to everyone's need for protection. He even claimed that he could call forth legions of angels for immediate rescue if he so desired.
