Melting Barriers

From the January 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The divisions and cruelties of the carnal mind that would partition the creation of God into races and classes, the haves and the have-nots, are being seriously challenged by modern thinkers. Demands to do away with these barriers have caught the attention of the world. It is the unseen and often unrecognized operation of Christ Jesus' theology, alive in the hearts of men today, which is sparking this challenge.

Evidences of this are apparent in the war on poverty, on ignorance, on slums. And also in the desire of youth to serve the poor and underprivileged. It is not merely a disenchantment with the laissez-faire of yesterday but more often a deep-seated love that inspires their work. When this sort of love animates society, we face a breakup, not a breakdown, on the world scene. The warmth of divine Love is melting barriers of restriction. The power of God, Love, lived in our daily lives, alone can do this. The gentleness of caring is a mighty and forward-moving thrust.

Most of the social ills now confronting the world are built not on the oneness of creation but on divisions—divisions founded on status, on religion, on race. The very word "race" suggests division.
