How Do You Read the News?

From the January 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do you ever wonder as you read the news what you, as one person, can do about the innumerable problems facing the world today—problems involving such numbers of people that you are tempted to feel helpless before such a formidable array of temporal power?

To begin with, you can find inspiration and instruction in the Holy Bible on how to approach insurmountable problems in the best way possible. The prophet Isaiah said, "Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths." Isa. 2:3;

In other words, the Christian Scientist realizes, first of all, that he cannot find a solution to a problem on the same level as the problem. He has to start by lifting his thoughts above the problem into the calm heights of Mind, where God's angels abound, appearing as messages of hope to the frightened or despairing human consciousness. Mrs. Eddy defines "angels" in the Glossary of Science and Health as, "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality."Science and Health, p. 581; It is highly important for the Christian Scientist as he reads the news to rise into a more spiritual consciousness and quietly acknowledge the presence and power of these angel thoughts passing to man.
