Twenty-one years ago while in England, I learned for the first time of Christian Science. I returned to my homeland and told my family about Christian Science, especially that one could really remain well without the use of medicine. This impressed my mother, who was taking medicines for several difficult problems. Through many years she had suffered from headaches, which were so severe that she was at times confined to bed. In addition, she underwent many painful and long examinations at a hospital. The doctors reached the conclusion that my mother would be obliged, for the remainder of her life, to take certain vital medicines to assure normal functioning of the stomach. Every morning her tray full of bottles of medicine was placed on the breakfast table. She visited the doctor's office for a checkup every two weeks.
My mother began to study the weekly Lesson-Sermons and to attend the Sunday services and Wednesday evening testimony meetings in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Shortly thereafter, through the help of a Christian Science practitioner, she experienced a complete and permanent healing of the disorders. Her gratitude to God, who freed her from the slavery of the medicines, knows no bounds.
My father was convinced of the truth of Christian Science before he passed on. I remained somewhat skeptical and critical of Christian Science, although I went with my mother to the church services now and then. I don't recall that my mother ever missed any of the meetings. Some years later she became a member of a branch church and of The Mother Church.
