This testimony is written as a statement of gratitude for Christian Science. A dear aunt, a listed practitioner in the Journal for many years, lived this religion in her daily life. I would like to tell of two instances when this aunt's love and prayerful work helped me see God's love for me in meeting my human needs.
In the first instance, I had to learn obedience to God's law. After my father's passing, when I first moved into an apartment, I was very lonely because I didn't have a single friend. Once a week I hitchhiked about ten miles to and from my old neighborhood to see my former friends. While I knew that hitchhiking was against the law, I paid no attention to this because of my loneliness, and because this method was my only means of transportation.
One morning after Sunday School I hitchhiked to see one of my friends. But this time I did not quite make it, because two boys who were out looking for trouble jumped me and knocked me down. One of them then kicked me in the eye and severely injured it. Two men who had seen the assault asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital; but I immediately said No, as I was a Christian Scientist. The men were very cooperative and understanding and let me use their phone to call my aunt. Two of her friends came and picked me up and took me to her home.
