I began the study of Christian Science...

From the September 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I began the study of Christian Science almost forty years ago. I had been told, following complicated surgery, that I could live only a short time. A kindly neighbor came to see me, bringing me a copy of The Christian Science journal. She said, "It is wonderful to know that 'divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.'" I learned that this statement is found on page 494 of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. In the article she had marked in the Journal I read more of God's love. I asked about the textbook and was given it, together with a King James Bible and a Christian Science Quarterly, and was shown how to study the Lesson-Sermons. I found a new way of life, as is promised in the Bible in the words of Christ Jesus, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life" (John 5:39).

New understanding came with daily study. The word "Comforter" stood out clearly in Science and Health (p. 55): "In the words of St. John: 'He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.' This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." I realize how much the Comforter has meant to me.

How grateful I was for that first healing, when suffering was replaced with blessed comfort, even though I knew very little of Christian Science! As I studied, other healings followed. Broken bones were set and healed through scientific prayer.
