One Saturday night about three years ago, while working in the kitchen, I fell. I was unable to move for a while, and I was alone in the house with no prospect that anyone would look for me before Monday.
I prayed earnestly to realize that my welfare was not dependent upon people but upon God. I felt sure that what I needed was as present and available as God was. Part of a sentence from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy came to me: "Mind, God, is the source and condition of all existence"(p. 181). The paragraph in which these words appear begins: "To reduce inflammation, dissolve a tumor, or cure organic disease, I have found divine Truth more potent than all lower remedies. And why not, since Mind, God, is the source and condition of all existence?" As I reasoned in this way, I was able to get to the telephone in the hall and pull the telephone off its stand.
I briefly explained to the telephone operator that because of an accident I needed some special help from her. She asked if I needed a doctor or an ambulance, and I replied, "No, thank you. I need only these people you will call for me." I am grateful that I wasn't in the least tempted to have some sort of emergency help at that instant, for my situation did seem serious.
