The greatest privilege of my life has...

From the January 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The greatest privilege of my life has been that of being reared in Christian Science. My parents were led to Christian Science when my mother as a young woman was given only months to live by three eminent physicians in the city in which we lived. She was healed, and from that time she and our whole family relied on Christian Science for healing. My sister and I were small children and were enrolled in the Christian Science Sunday School, where we were taught the truths of this great Science and how to demonstrate it.

During my high school years I began to show symptoms of a goiter, and by the time I was a junior in college it was embarrassingly noticeable. I dressed to conceal it as best I could. Well-meaning friends expressed alarm and offered advice. One of these was the uncle of a college friend in whose home I often visited. He was a physician specializing in throat conditions. He knew I was a Christian Scientist and told me it was impossible to get rid of the condition in any way other than by a surgical operation. Although I had had help from practitioners from time to time, this was an awakening to me and my parents.

Not too long after this warning from my friend, I was having treatment from a Christian Science practitioner for injuries received in an automobile accident. I remember that she impressed on me, over and over again, that right now I was complete and perfect and whole and always had been. This convincing truth quickly healed me, and some time later we noticed that I no longer had the goiter. Here was a healing that left no doubt in the mind of anyone who had seen the evidence. Several months later I was again a guest in the home of the same college friend, and her uncle looked at me intently until he asked if he could speak to me alone. Seeing no scar, he wanted to know what I had done, and I reminded him that Christian Science was my only remedy. He was awed by the evidence, and told me how wonderful it was. I have always been humbly grateful for this convincing proof of mental surgery.
