When I was quite young, I had a governess who was a Christian Scientist, and she spoke to my mother one day about the healing effects of Christian Science. At that time the family was well, happy, and financially secure. Mother politely listened for a few moments, and that was the end of the conversation. She later told me she saw no need to bother with something we had no need of.
My father had a successful business of his own, and, when he was thirty-five years old, the time came for him to sell it. He had expected to receive a cash settlement from the buyer, but instead he was given stock in the business. This worried him a great deal, as he felt the entire responsibility to support the family was on his shoulders. Through fear and constant worry, as Mother told me, his weight went down to seventy pounds. They went to specialists and were told there was no hope for him. His case was diagnosed as tuberculosis, and he was given about two months to live.
As they left the doctor's office, Mother said that the two words "Christian Science" kept coming to her. This was fifteen years after the governess had given these precious words to my mother.
