The more nearly the sun is directly overhead, the smaller becomes our shadow. Physically, of course, it is impossible completely to lose one's shadow, but it is possible to be free of mental shadows—experiences of sorrow and discord—by keeping one's mind directly under the control of God, divine Principle. To the degree that one allows one's thinking to be perpetually governed by Soul instead of sense, by the eternally unerring, immortal Mind rather than false mortal belief, by perfect, impartial Love rather than hate or personality preferences, one will be free both of mental shadows and of physical discord as well. If one maintains mental unity with infinite God, or good, it becomes impossible to experience evil in any form.
It is a fact, as the Bible affirms, that "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all." I John 1:5; There are no shadows of fear or discord in God or in the real man, the idea of God. Man is spiritual and perfect, always expressing the strong, sinless, joy-filled nature of his creator. His consciousness is at one with the beauty and harmony of divine Spirit, perpetually illumined by the understanding of Love's omnipresence.
But the human mind errs when it accepts false suggestions — beliefs that a power exists apart from God, or good, and that this opposing power can produce discord, disease, and death to plague humanity. These phenomena of evil, though seeming to be real and sometimes painful and frustrating, are actually as ephemeral as shadows. When the spiritual understanding of God's all-power and all-presence is established, they disappear, and health and harmony are restored.
