Christian Science came into my life when I was eight years old. At that time my father, after eighteen years of doctoring and after he was given up by his physician, reluctantly agreed to try Christian Science for a period of twenty-four hours. He had an instantaneous healing. This was in 1904. Since then our family has experienced many fine healings in Christian Science, including my own quick healing of a broken anklebone.
Other healings include those of influenza and typhoid fever, which I experienced as a youth, depending, in great part, upon my father for the healings. But the healing which had the greatest impact and brought the greatest growth Spiritward was that of multiple sclerosis.
I would say that the overcoming of fear was perhaps one of the most outstanding factors in this healing. From my earliest Sunday School days, the nothingness of fear was always one of my most memorable lessons. It came back to me with great force when after a vigorous life free of sickness, I suddenly seemed to succumb to this supposedly incurable disease. This was over four years ago. Many strong statements found in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy sustained me and my family during this period, ruling out all fear and establishing in our thought only what was true and Godlike. On page 188 Mrs. Eddy says, "What is termed disease does not exist." What reassurance those words conveyed! Again, on page 368, she states, "When fear disappears, the foundation of disease is gone." In I John 4: 18, we read, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear."
