There is a genuine basis for a morality that is not dominated by worldly trends. It is the understanding of divine Truth. In Truth the universe and man reflect their creator, God. They are purely spiritual. That is, all is the expression of Truth, which includes unchanging purity, intelligence, and strength. One who recognizes that these attributes have their origin in God, good, will naturally be sincere, honest, considerate, and upright. Purity will underlie his relationships. Proportionately as the thinking of the individual is filled with this spiritual truth, he can perceive his surroundings as created by God, and the healing of inharmonious and immoral conditions is the result.
A question often asked is, What is truth? or, How do I find truth? One is encouraged to find an answer through the inspired Word of the Bible—for example, in the spiritual record of creation in the first chapter of Genesis. The understanding that Truth, God, is Spirit and man is His image and likeness begins to dissolve the material basis of thinking—the assumption that matter is real and contains life. Because of the reality of spiritual creation this belief in a material basis is unreal and therefore cannot answer the question, What is truth?
What can be done as the first step in coming closer to absolute Truth? Pride in personal opinions and views should give way to humility through the recognition of the immutability and perfection of the spiritual creation, which is untouched by human theories. "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Gen. 1:3; We can be confident that the desire for greater understanding, as long as it is equivalent to striving for more grace, is heard and is blessed. Human consciousness is enlightened by divine Love. This happens quite simply because God—who is defined in Christian Science by seven synonyms: Spirit, Mind, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love—is the only reality, the exclusive presence, the one ruling omnipotence.
