The Affections: Material or Spiritual?

From the September 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In working out problems through Christian Science it is helpful to ask ourselves, "Where are our affections?" Physical healing and harmonized experience come to an enlightened state of consciousness that relates more to Spirit than to matter. And if our affections are mainly material, we need to learn to love the spiritual more, since Christian Science healing is based on the allness and oneness of Spirit, God.

In Science and Health Mary Baker Eddy writes: "To ascertain our progress, we must learn where our affections are placed and whom we acknowledge and obey as God. If divine Love is becoming nearer, dearer, and more real to us, matter is then submitting to Spirit. The objects we pursue and the spirit we manifest reveal our standpoint, and show what we are winning." Science and Health, p. 239;

Christ Jesus, the Master, taught his followers to put the spiritual first. He declared, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6:33; To the degree we seek the spiritual reality of being and put it first in our lives, we find our human conditions properly adjusted as a natural consequence of affection for the things of God.
