The Church That Prays for the Congregation

From the September 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Why go to church? If you are a young person, you've probably asked that question of yourself, your parents, your friends. If you are an adult, have you wondered why young people challenge traditional church attendance?

Perhaps each one of us should ask himself what his purpose is in going to church. Is he simply following the traditional approach to religion through Sunday services? Probably he would agree that most people attend church out of a desire to get divine aid and inspiration. Also that many others are there from a sense of duty or in search of companionship or community acceptance.

Is any of these reasons—even the desire for divine aid—really enough? After all, each of them tends to be in some degree self-centered, motivated by one's own needs or wishes.
