Our Conceptions Determine Our Experience

From the September 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What makes me conscious of existing? What says, "I am aware of living" or, "I am here"? Many of us have asked ourselves these questions. Furthermore, we may have even asked, "Is there any real purpose in my being here?" In the face of the general belief that the life of man is merely a space of time between birth and death, that it is material and hence destructible, one might possibly see no purpose at all in living.

It is not uncommon to hear it said that one's life is simply a matter of chance. To some, life may be sad or drab, or it may be a constant battle for health and happiness. To some, well-being, peace of mind, satisfaction, the joys of home, and so forth may have been all but unknown. Yet there are those who have not accepted futility and have turned away from a merely material sense of life to acknowledge a spiritual power as the source of their existence. This has been evidenced in their experience as more abundant health, happiness, peace, and purposeful living.

These two opposite viewpoints, the material and spiritual, are contradictory. One stems from the belief that the life of man is materially created by human beings; the other, that his life is spiritually created by God. Only one can be true. Which is it? The answer to this question determines our experience.
