The Truth Made Relevant

From the September 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When disease threatens, when human relationships become strained, when supply seems short, when one feels lonely, insecure, inadequate, afraid—healing is needed. Christian Science presents the truth of God. It explains this truth in a way that is practical. And the truth heals.

The remarkable thing about this presentation of the truth is that it comes to us in language we can understand, even when we are complaining. Just as with the coming of Christ Jesus, "The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us," John 1:14; so Christian Science comes explaining not merely abstract truths, but the truth as it pertains to our own predicament. If we think we are sick, Christian Science does not merely say that God is All, and good, and there is no sickness in Him. It shows us that the material so-called senses that report the symptoms of sickness are false. The sense of self that says, "I am weak, in pain, hot," and so on, is a liar. Understanding this, we can reject the symptoms and accept the health that always belongs to us as children of God.

God is Mind. Man is idea, existing entirely in the divine Mind. This Mind never conceives a disease symptom; therefore such a symptom does not exist. But until we have applied this truth to the claim being made in terms of symptoms in a particular case, we have not begun to acknowledge the practical "Word made flesh" nature of the healing truth. The claim being made is that there is another mind opposed to God.
