Although my husband was born and raised in Christian Science, I knew nothing of this religion and was, in fact, an active member of another denomination until shortly before our marriage, when I began attending my husband's church with him. I particularly enjoyed the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, where I could hear others tell of their experiences, but I did not do any studying on my own, nor did I feel that this was necessarily the religion for me.
About a year went by in this way, while I mentally sat on a fence, torn between family and childhood loyalties and the fascinating truths of Christian Science being tangibly demonstrated around me. The day finally came when I was forced out of this halfway attitude and into total commitment to what, by then, I knew was right.
I awoke one morning with a pain in my right leg, but dismissed it as a cramp. By evening I could not stand on the leg, and the pain had intensified to the point of a constant throb. We called a Christian Science practitioner and asked for treatment in Christian Science. I spent a very restless night, being awake and unable to find any position in which the pain was alleviated. In the morning I attempted to walk, but the mere effort to stand caused extreme pain. Before my husband left for work, he brought me the Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Christian Science Hymnal, suggesting that I look through these when I felt up to it. He also asked me to call the practitioner and talk to her.
