Demonstrating Eternal Life

From the November 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The hope of immortality is ingrained in the human heart and has been part of most religious systems, both ancient and modern. Christian Science calls the immortality of man more than a theory, more than a hope. It explains that it is a spiritually scientific fact based on the allness of Spirit, God, and the spiritually scientific nature of His creation, man and the universe. And it maintains that in proportion as this divine truth of Life's eternal nature is acknowledged it will be demonstrated.

Eternality has no beginning and no ending, but is the continuous unfolding of unchanging Life, Truth, and Love. The eternal God exists in the forever now, expressing Himself in His perfect ideas, maintaining man undying and intact. The material senses, however, continually bombard us with the suggestion that life is a fragile thing subject to the vagaries of material conditions. The student of Christian Science recognizes that this false concept cannot refer to the life of the real man created by God in His own image but presents only an out-and-out counterfeit. Only this untrue mortal concept is subject to sin, debility, and death.

There are two common theories about death, neither of which is Christianly scientific. The first regards it as a friend, leading to immediate heavenly bliss, to be welcomed with joy. The other views it as a frightening enemy to be dreaded and feared as an uncertain fate or even as a loss of identity, or oblivion. Christian Science teaches that death is a self-proclaimed darkness, which is annihilated by the light of omnipotent, omnipresent, eternal Truth.
