God told Elijah to choose Elisha (see I Kings 19:16). Each year authorized teachers of Christian Science may, on application, select for teaching thirty pupils with "promising proclivities toward Christian Science." The whole sentence by Mrs. Eddy reads: "Christian Scientists who are teachers shall carefully select for pupils such only as have good past records and promising proclivities toward Christian Science." Manual of The Mother Church, Art. XXVI, Sect. 2
What was it that brought together Elijah and Elisha as teacher and pupil? Was it not the law of God? This same law advances itself today in bringing together teachers and students of Christian Science.
What of the pupil—you and me? Do our proclivities as students match those of Elisha, who stated what he wanted most of his teacher in these words: "I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me"? II Kings 2:9 A class-taught student of Christian Science finds himself in much the same position as Elisha. We ask ourselves what it was that made the relationship of Elijah and Elisha so beautiful. So successful.
