When I was fourteen years of age, it was necessary for me to leave school. I applied for a position with a large firm which then had a policy of engaging staff youths and temporary employees. The temporary boys were only employed for two years. I was a temporary boy. Only boys who had had a private school education were put on the staff. Vacancies were filled once a year and were very few.
Soon after joining this firm a friend recommended to my father that I should attend a Christian Science Sunday School. This I did, and I began to learn about God and what man really is as His reflection.
I also got busy filling in the gaps of my education. When I was nineteen my case came up for decision. I had been with the firm for five years. The engineer in chief saw me and inquired what I was studying at nighttime. He recommended that I add another subject, which I did. When I was twenty I was made a staff officer. This meant that I was a permanent employee, that I became a member of the superannuation fund, and that my salary was not determined by industrial tribunals. When I was twenty-two I got the highest position to which I could attain, considering my qualifications.
