The Church of Our Choice

From the January 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The quality of the church we attend is determined by what we accept in consciousness. Since our consciousness is our experience and there is nothing external to thought, we can only experience what we hold in thought. You and I may go to the same church, yet each of us will have our own individual view of it.

In absolute fact, Church is a divine idea, embraced in Mind, God. The spiritual sense of it, given by Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, reads, "The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle." Science and Health, p. 583; This statement presents the absolute view of Church—the only real Church there is; the one that's built in Mind and expressed in individual consciousness.

Church, as we perceive it humanly, fulfills a holy mission clearly stated in the second paragraph as follows: "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." Does this describe the church of your choice? The one you are currently attending?
