To Be a Law to Yourself

From the January 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some years ago the importance of obedience to Mrs. Eddy's instruction in the following paragraph in Science and Health was pointed out to me: "Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake." Science and Health, p. 442;

Despite my attempts to understand this, I still wasn't clear about how to be a law to myself. One day I came across the following sentence in Science and Health: "The Christianly scientific man reflects the divine law, thus becoming a law unto himself." ibid., p. 458; Here was the answer to my difficulty. I saw that to be Christianly was to be pure, that is, Christlike in thought and conduct, and to be Christianly scientific was to demonstrate, through spiritual understanding, the healing power of the Christ, Truth. So I realized that the Christianly scientific man reflects the Christ-spirit and proves through demonstration his understanding of the law of God, good.

Christ Jesus showed us this. Among other things, he proved the instant power of the spiritual law of abundant supply by feeding a multitude, though there seemed to be only a small amount of food available. He proved the dynamic power of the divine law of health by healing all kinds of disease. He proved the ceaseless power of the immortal law of Life by bringing Lazarus from the tomb—alive!
