The seed of healing by Christian Science was first sown in my thought when I was twelve. My family lived near a large boardinghouse where government employees resided, including a doctor, a nurse, and a couple who had a little boy about eight years old.
One day when I was visiting at this house there was much excitement and puzzlement. The boy had become ill with diphtheria, and the mother had refused all medical help. She had retired to her room with the child. I was told that she was a Christian Scientist and had sought help through a Christian Science practitioner. After secluding herself for two days she reappeared with the child. Upon examination of the child, the medical members of the household had to admit that the boy showed no trace of the disease. He was healed.
When next I heard of Christian Science, I was married and had three children. My sister, who had become interested in Christian Science and lived out of the city, had left her seven-year-old daughter with our mother. My sister wrote, asking me to enroll the children—her daughter and my three—in a Christian Science Sunday School. I did so.
