Church in Action News and Announcements

Active members can no longer be counted on 10 fingers!

From the April 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It began with a need to refurbish a dismal, dingy Sunday School. There wasn't enough money to hire a contractor, but there were adequate funds for paint, lights, and other materials. So, the members decided to do the work themselves.

At first, two members who had carpentry skills worked all day on Saturdays. As one of them taught the oldest Sunday School class, he decided to ask both his pupils and students from the Christian Science Organization at the local university to help. The enthusiasm generated by this participation affected Sunday School enrollment. Two adjoining rooms had to be converted to classrooms. And there was another result—an influx of enthusiastic Sunday School workers.

The executive board of this branch in Ontario, Canada, realized that the same vigor and vitality belonged to the entire membership. It wasn't long before someone at a members' meeting proposed that the church have a specific objective to support The Mother Church's healing goal. While no one knew quite what the objective should be, it soon became apparent.
