Christ Jesus revealed the mental nature of all things. He proved by healing "all manner of disease" and by quieting a storm with the words "Peace, be still" that matter does not limit man. But to the extent that people believe matter to have in it life, truth, intelligence, or substance they are limited by their belief. Further, Jesus exposed the mortal hatred of whatever exposes matter's unreality.
To the minds of mortals, good is found in matter. Happiness is in material sensation; wealth is the accumulation of matter; personal satisfaction is in gaining status as a mortal—a material person—among other mortals; intelligence is in the material brain; even love is biological or biophysical, as is the ability to create. A demonstration of the mental and spiritual nature of life, truth, intelligence, and substance threatens all that mortals hold as the good of their very existence. It was natural, from a materialistic view, for mortals to hate Jesus. The mortal mind was not then, and is not now, willing to give up its material sense of existence even though by so doing people could find freedom from sin, sickness, and death.
Not material persons but the belief in matter crucified Jesus. Jesus' answer to the persons who thought they were crucifying him was, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do."Luke 23:34; And, literally, those who expressed that hatred did not know what they were doing. They were victims—tools—of the belief in matter.
