Easter's meaning for us all

From the March 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What does Easter commemorate? Not tragedy but triumph. Not sadness but joy. The first lines of a hymn by Frances Thompson Hill that is often sung at this season speak eloquently:

Let us sing of Easter gladness
That rejoices every day.Christian Science Hymnal, No 413;

The original meaning of the word "Easter" is obscure. It may in fact be derived from the name of the pagan goddess of spring and fertility, Eastre or Eostre. But it is deeply meaningful to all Christians. They see the Easter season as commemorating one of the greatest moments of religious history—the resurrection from the grave of the master Christian, Christ Jesus. This event stood out to his disciples as providing indisputable proof of the immortality of man, giving meaning to their lives and hope to everyone on earth.
