Do we find ourselves overwhelmed by the enormity of some problem? If we're delving deeper and deeper into the morass of sickness or lack, unhappiness or loss, we're likely to get stymied. The solution comes as we stop acting like a limited mortal trying to overcome some trouble from a material basis and begin to act like God's representative. The answer to any challenge is reached by being more spiritually-minded, by working out the facts of perfect God and perfect man right where we are.
In Webster's dictionary the word "problem" isn't described primarily as some scrape or plight to be overcome but as something to be worked out—"a question raised for inquiry, consideration, or solution." So if faced with some challenge, how much better it is to see ourselves as metaphysicians, working out the problem of being. Mrs. Eddy frequently refers to the word "problem" in this sense. For instance, in Science and Health she writes, "Good demands of man every hour, in which to work out the problem of being." Science and Health, pp. 261–262;
In Christian Science, problem solving means proving that we're spiritual, proving that we're created, formed, and sustained by God. It means identifying ourselves and others as spiritual beings. It means gaining a spiritual basis for all thought and action. Working from such a basis, every healing, every victory over the material senses, is much more than getting out of some trouble. It is a step forward in our demonstration of true being. It is bringing to light the scientific fact that God is All and that man is spiritual and perfect.
