I used to think metaphysics was like a staircase. Each demonstration of the truth of God and man would give us more understanding of the Christ; and the higher we climbed, the more certain our ability to heal. But now it seems to me that metaphysics is more like a circle. The more we understand of Christ, Truth, the more apparent it becomes that the staircase is an illusion of the human mind. The last step is but a prelude to a new concept of the first.
Take for example the concept of Christ. Perhaps our first experience in the Science of Christ, Christian Science, was a healing. We understood little of the metaphysics of God and man, but somehow we became meek enough to acknowledge a power higher than our belief of life in matter. In this state of meekness, Truth, the Christ, made itself known to us, and we were healed.
Often these first healings are quick and decisive. Then we begin to study Christian Science to learn more of the healing Christ, and we do learn. The total nothingness of matter becomes clearer. The allness of Spirit, God, becomes the basis of our progress. And the perfection of man as God's spiritual reflection becomes a logical fact that we learn to prove by degrees—each learning step a healing of some kind. Then, as we rise higher, we find less need for words or human logic, and eventually our first concept of Christ—that wonderful sense of divine illumination when unseen Truth assures us all is well and we are healed—becomes our advanced concept of Christ. Once again healing is spontaneous. This, too, needs further understanding, and we proceed, if we are to progress, on around the circle.
