A church for the community

From the May 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is a tremendous thing to know that there is only one Mind, one consciousness—the divine Mind that is Love. It enables us to acknowledge with gratitude "how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Ps. 133:1; It gives us confidence in the assurance of Christ Jesus that "where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." Matt. 18:20; Is not this characteristic of church, truly seen?

The Christ is ever present, the true idea of God and of man's sonship with God. It is eternally true that we are inseparable from the Life that is God, and this immortal unity constitutes all that exists—God, Mind, and His idea, His creation. The fact that there is only one God is our protection from all that is not of God. God being One, He is All, and whatever is not of God is nothing. God engraved this certainty, this first of His commandments, on human consciousness: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Ex. 20:3;

Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "God is one. The allness of Deity is His oneness. Generically man is one, and specifically man means all men." Science and Health, p. 267; Our oneness—that is, our unity—with God and with each other, is now, here, everywhere, and it is good. We may feel we have come from diverse places and from very different backgrounds; but this belief of distance and separation exists only to human sense. In reality we have always been at one in Spirit, we are at one now, and we will be so for eternity.
