From belief to understanding

From the May 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Regardless of our present perception of things, the spiritual facts of existence remain unshakable. A glimpse of this can be greatly reassuring. We see that all is truly well with us and with everyone, because all is well with man, the constant reflection of God's love and perfection. This is the spiritual fact. The challenge, of course, is to prove it—and we can.

If we have a pressing need to recognize our purpose in life, to feel loved, to correct a physical disorder, our real need in each of these cases—as in any situation requiring healing and adjustment—is to correct a false belief. Disharmony must be a false belief, because the spiritual facts of good alone have reality and substance. "Mortal mind judges by the testimony of the material senses," Mrs. Eddy tells us, "until Science obliterates this false testimony. An improved belief is one step out of error, and aids in taking the next step and in understanding the situation in Christian Science." Science and Health, p. 296;

If some obstacle appears to be blocking our freedom, we can still be assured that perfection is our true status now. For that very reason healing is inevitable, and on that basis alone Christian Science is demonstrated. Yet sometimes we awake to a particular aspect of our wholeness by degrees—the false belief in evil is cut down layer by layer until completely removed.
