Why compromise?

From the May 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

People are learning through Christian Science the absolute truth that man is the likeness of God, Spirit, and has no element of matter in him. The full comprehension and demonstration of this fact is the summit of spiritual understanding, a state of consciousness in which we shall know ourselves to be perfect, with no knowledge of evil, illness, or death. We reach this summit of understanding by progressively overcoming whatever would seek to compromise our demonstration of absolute truth along the way.

We demonstrate in Christian Science only what we presently understand of it, but even in the sorest trial our most effective starting point is that which is most absolute. We need to refuse to compromise with matter, refuse to concede to it one iota of power, because God, good, is the only power. The healing of an ailment is on a more secure basis when we're faithful to this absolute position, and it marks a step forward in our understanding of true being. This understanding grows faster when we begin our mental arguments with the great fact of God's omnipotence, despite any evidence to the contrary. Mrs. Eddy writes, "You only weaken your power to heal through Mind, by any compromise with matter; which is virtually acknowledging that under difficulties the former is not equal to the latter." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 53;

A young Christian Scientist ran over his foot with a power lawn mower. The condition alarmed him, and he went to a hospital. The doctor instructed a nurse to wash, bandage, and medicate the patient, and in the morning the doctor would attend to the wound.
