Breaking up monopolies

From the May 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God is all-inclusive. The one divine Principle includes all ideas and activities. This total inclusiveness consists only of the real and true. By its very nature, the infinity of spiritual reality must include all.

Human thought, however, as it reaches for reality and leaves behind its limitations and ignorances, involves a process of inclusion and exclusion. We need to include those concepts and activities that lead toward the goodness of God and exclude those that carry us away from good. But sometimes we engage in facets of exclusiveness that can be detrimental both to the individual and society. Monopolistic practices often fit into this category.

Although the inclination to monopolize is a strong tendency in human thought, its harmful nature can be effectively challenged with metaphysical truths. The wrongful aspects of exercising a monopoly are rooted in an emphasis on personal and restrictive controls— expanding one's own opportunity at the expense of others. We take steps toward breaking general monopolistic elements of thought by first removing them from our own lives. As we discern more accurately Mind's all-inclusiveness, this truth will bring the legitimate human activity of exclusion into line with sound practice. And it will enable us to rid our lives of inappropriate phases of exclusiveness.
