During recent years, through more earnest study of Christian Science, I have found that the Christ leads me in my daily life and is always with me, ever ready to help and to heal. Last year I had a further step of spiritual awakening from material dependency by having class instruction in Christian Science. Later, when I became ill with a sore throat, I had to prove what I had learned. First, I lay down to sleep. I had ignored the situation instead of healing it. After a short while I awoke in perspiration. But worst of all I was filled with fear, as I could not swallow or breathe freely. While reaching for the telephone to call a Christian Science practitioner, all I thought was, Father, You are with me, here and now. I am not alone. Suddenly I was able to say it out loud, and then I put down the telephone receiver and turned on the light. At the same time I turned completely and solely to God. This brought me the first sign of relief.
I took my Bible, which lay open near my bed, and read the verses (Ezek. 12: 21-28) beginning, "And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying." This passage was illumined, and I maintained aloud the reality of my true being. I thanked God, my Father, for having created me perfect, and I thoughtfully declared the absolute presence and omnipotence of Truth, of Love's tenderness, and of the intelligence that maintains all—God. I became aware of the nothingness of this physical claim when I opened Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and read (p. 495), "When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea." It became clear to me that at that very moment I was His idea, and that the Father always protects and maintains His beloved child. The twenty-third Psalm, as it is spiritually interpreted in Science and Health, caused me to sink back completely into the arms of divine Love, and the whole phantasma was gone. The first line reads (p. 578), "[Divine love] is my shepherd; I shall not want." My gratitude was great, and after about an hour I lay down and fell asleep.
In Christian Science we learn that our thought determines our daily life; and we can know that our thoughts are responsive to God and His omnipresence. As we grow to let only good and perfect concepts govern us, we will reap what we have sown.
