At the age of five I was troubled with pain in one of my legs. When it persisted and I began to limp, my mother sought help from a physician. He measured my legs and told Mother that one of them was an inch shorter than the other. He warned that the condition would worsen, and that I would never walk normally.
Deeply grieved, my mother reported the doctor's verdict to a neighbor, who had recently heard of Christian Science. The neighbor mentioned that there were Christian Science practitioners who healed by prayer, and Mother took me to see one. A vivid recollection of that visit has remained. I was placed on a window seat while the practitioner talked to Mother and prayed for me. Later, as she showed us to the door, the practitioner emphasized to Mother the importance of turning away from measuring my legs.
I remember skipping ahead of Mother on the way home, and soon after that I attended the Christian Science Sunday School for the first time. I had been instantly healed through the practitioner's distinct realization of my perfect selfhood as God's child. Since that early introduction to Christian Science, my legs have been even in length and completely normal in every way. Six years later I had a quick healing through mental surgery alone of two deep wounds in my chin.
