A spiritual impetus for solo singing

From the January 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Are you a branch church soloist?

If so, perhaps you have already discovered that to sing a solo the way it should be sung is an art. Yes, it requires art to deliver the solo in such a way that it accomplishes its purpose—to praise God beautifully, clearly, joyfully. Together, you and the solo provide a transparency through which God's message blesses and heals.

To accomplish this, the soloist needs a well-trained voice and sound musicianship, as well as the humility to receive God's holy Word and express it. This involves not only vocal preparation but also spiritual inspiration. Truly satisfying solo work is not possible without vocal freedom and an understanding of the musical content of the selection; but the spiritual impetus must also be present, or the solo will lack true vitality.
