Power, prisons, and paradise

From the January 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It has been said that the person proud of his large intellect is like the condemned man proud of his large cell. To some degree this can be said of any attribute, including power, considered apart from its spiritual source.

On the other hand, the might of God, divine Spirit, welling up in thought, directs all abilities constructively and leads to the freedom that lies entirely outside the walls of human authority.

Relationships—between women and men, minorities and majorities, parents and children—often seem to be power struggles. These can be harmonized by an understanding of Spirit's control. For example, the compulsion to climb an organizational hierarchy or dominate a family circle (often motivated by an apparent lack of self-worth) can be calmed by realizing that the real man includes everything he needs within his spiritual identity—and all of it is valuable. These are the facts for every one of God's sons and daughters.
