Testimonies of Healing

During my nine years as a student of...

From the January 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During my nine years as a student of Christian Science, the question has occasionally occurred, "What would I do if for some reason I became unconscious? How would I be able to take care of myself?" The following incident taught me that God, divine Mind, is the source of my consciousness, and that He is an ever-present help. For this reason, I'll never again fear loss of consciousness.

Two summers ago during a riding lesson I was riding bareback when my horse darted off suddenly. The force of his abrupt start threw me off backward. I hit my head sharply on the ground and was knocked unconscious.

The day before, I had studied this citation from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 559): "The 'still, small voice' of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe's remotest bound. The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.' It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear." This passage had meant a great deal to me, and it was highly appropriate now. Even in an apparently semiconscious state, I was firm in my decision to rely on God, and I was then able to rise. Although I don't remember doing so, I gave my riding instructor the phone number of my sister in law who lived nearby, as well as the name and phone number of a Christian Science practitioner.
