Destroying fear's pseudo-authority

From the March 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

No one would willingly let himself be invaded by sickness, but if consciousness—the government of the body—is first undermined and then replaced with fear, an incursion by disease may seem possible, legitimate, and unstoppable.

The puppet government of fear will, until destroyed by Truth, seem to justify the takeover by arguing in support of the superior power of illness and against the effectiveness of God's government. Mortal mind may suggest that since disease is so prevalent, God's authority is obviously insufficient to prevent it, and so fear must take control and specify what needs to be done to protect or restore health.

But even though disease is believed to be a despotic superpower, it cannot actually conquer a single human being if it is challenged by a consciousness alert to the impenetrable infinity of God's pure— and perfectly healthy—creation. Sickness can only invade the body, the manifestation of human consciousness, if we believe we are faced with something real, a superior force acting with the authority of law that we cannot resist. Disease, fear's justification for a "coup," has no legitimacy, power, or real existence. Its illusion of credibility comes from fear's false government. When fear's alleged rule is eventually seen as based on a lie, and fear is thrown out of office by the Christ, the disease is nowhere to be found. It never was more than an illusion fabricated by the propaganda of fear.
