CHURCH IN ACTION INFORMATION

"What brings people to church?"

From the March 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A stranger to a small Church of Christ, Scientist, was the first person on his feet after the Wednesday evening meeting was opened to testimonies and remarks. "I have lived in this neighborhood for over twenty years and I came in here tonight, against my better judgment, to find out just what brings these people to this church every Sunday and Wednesday. I've never seen a wedding, or a funeral, or any parties going on, but I figure there must be something that brings people here so regularly. What is it?"

The Reader thanked the stranger for coming, then invited him to listen to testifier who would probably be glad to explain their reasons for coming. And the church members could hardly wait for a turn to share their experiences and healings as a result of learning about God through the study of Christian Science.

After hearing several testimonies the stranger stood up again and said what he was really searching for was the answer to his relationship to God—and he was "beginning to get the message."
