Consistency without seam or rent

From the August 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At a point in history when the natural sciences seem to dominate much of mankind's thinking, it is interesting to consider the absolute conformity to Truth and Spirit that pervaded Christ Jesus' words and works. The writer of Hebrews said of him, "Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity."Heb. 1:9. In no way did he vary from complete trust in and dependence upon God in overcoming the vicissitudes of human existence. As humble servant of God and mankind, he demonstrated the great revelations of divine Science, the truths of immortal Mind. As such he is mankind's supreme Exemplar.

The seamless robe that Jesus wore may be said to represent the wholeness of the Christ. You and I may not have yet put on the whole Christ. But we can seek to gain the sort of consistency exemplified by the Master. Christian Science makes this available to all mankind. In Science and Health, our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, observes, "The divine Science of man is woven into one web of consistency without seam or rent."Science and Health, p. 242.

We might ponder how well we are following Jesus' example and recognize the seams and rents that may be showing in our own thought. Probably, in honest self-appraisal, we would have to admit what we would prefer others not to know about! Nevertheless, it would be profitable to consider some of the seams and rents that mortal mind seeks endlessly to intrude into our seamless robe. In this way we may better see how to avoid such intrusion and thus progressively acquire and preserve greater consistency with the Christ-idea.
