Testimonies of Healing

When I realized that our second baby...

From the August 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I realized that our second baby was expected, I began a diligent study to better understand God's omnipotent law of good. Our first child had been born by Caesarean section, but I felt deeply that a normal second delivery was possible.

During the pregnancy I studied everything I could find in the Bible and in Mrs. Eddy's writings relating to birth, delivery, fear, progress, separation, structure, law, labor, and so on. While I was looking to find a doctor who would consider a normal delivery, I learned much about first listening to God for His direction and then being obedient to it. I realized, too, that all those to be involved in the delivery would be supported by divine law. Before long a doctor was found who respected my desire for a normal birth. Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 124), "Adhesion, cohesion, and attraction are properties of Mind," helped me to see that divine Mind unfolds each of its ideas. I also realized that God, divine Love, is the most mighty—in fact, the only— deliverer, not dependent on mortals to bring forth or reveal His offspring. This verse from Isaiah was very special throughout this time; it helped lift the fear of having another baby (41:10): "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

One of the reasons given for the necessity of a Caesarean section the first time was that I was too constricted to deliver normally. The Christian Science practitioner who was helping me this time explained that inspired thought is what stretches and expands. A Bible passage confirms this (Isa. 54:2): "Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations." The consciousness of divine Mind certainly has enough room for every spiritual idea, I reasoned. What was needed was to recognize this by expanding and stretching thought Spiritward. As I did this, I gained a better understanding of progress and progression and helped establish my thinking on a spiritual foundation. Studying this passage in Science and Health aided me in overcoming fear (p. 381): "When infringing some supposed law, you say that there is danger. This fear is the danger and induces the physical effects. We cannot in reality suffer from breaking anything except a moral or spiritual law."
