God's sons and daughters

From the August 1981 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Christian Science the first chapter of Genesis is understood to illustrate metaphorically the true, spiritual record of creation. Here creation is the act of God as Spirit, supreme Mind, revealing His perfect ideas from the least to the greatest. The Psalmist clearly describes true creation as the work of divine Mind, or Spirit. "O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all," he declares, adding later, "Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created."Ps. 104:24, 30.

The spiritual creation is summarized in these words: "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good."Gen. 1:31. One of the "good" things described in this inspired chapter is man: "God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."V. 27. Thus even in this wholly spiritual context, we see the importance of the male and female in man's being.

Referring to the first chapter of Genesis, Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "There is but one creator and one creation. This creation consists of the unfolding of spiritual ideas and their identities, which are embraced in the infinite Mind and forever reflected. These ideas range from the infinitesimal to infinity, and the highest ideas are the sons and daughters of God."Science and Health, pp. 502-503. God always has His sons and daughters, clearly distinguishable as such.
